Rosa Maria Otero Pabon

Rosa Maria Otero Pabon passed away peacefully surrounded by her loved ones on Monday, December 11, 2023 in her sister’s Port Saint Lucie, Florida home. It was a short but intense battle with cancer; so early in the morning the clouds lifted, and God ushered her to heaven to be with Him. She is survived by her beloved son Daniel Otero, daughter-in-law Diana Cordova, and grandchildren Daniel and Denisse Otero. She also leaves behind her loving siblings Rafael Otero, Felicita Rivera, Aida Luz Otero and Reyes Arnaldo Otero and an abundance of nieces and nephews along with many loyal friends and extended family members. She is predeceased by her parents Roman Otero Perez and Rosa Pabon and her brothers Julio Otero and Jose Otero. Rosa Maria Otero was born on August 30, 1946 in Vega Alta, Puerto Rico. She was the fifth born of seven children – Rafael Otero, Felicita Rivera, Julio Otero, Jose Otero, Rosa Maria Otero, Aida Luz Otero, and Reyes Arnaldo Otero. Rosita (or Ia), as she was referred to by some, enjoyed growing up in Vega Alta – she ran in the fields, played games with her siblings and friends, contributed to the family chores, and spent time with her family. In later years, she would reminisce about the purity and joy she got from life when she lived in Vega Alta and the values it instilled in her. When she was about 12 years old, she moved from the “campos” to the “ciudad” – the Caparra Terrace neighborhood of Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico. How exciting that was for her – it was big city life! Rosa Maria relished her time there too – her outgoing nature made it easy for her to make new friends quickly and permanently. Some of those friends were still friends with her today. In 1976, she bravely made the decision to leave her homeland and move to Lowell, Massachusetts – new country, new language, and new weather (those winters took some getting used to for her Latin blood – ha, ha, ha). There she was accompanied by her siblings Julio, Jose, and Felicita. After spending a few years in Massachusetts, Rosa Maria decided to move to Peekskill, New York to be close to her baby sister Aida Luz and her sister’s husband Diego Otero. In February of 1980, Rosa Maria achieved her greatest blessing - giving birth to her son Daniel Otero. He was the light of her eyes and she was fiercely protective of him. Not only did she love him deeply, but she was exceedingly proud of the man he had become and the values he carried from her. She spent many happy years in Peekskill making more friends and being involved in her community. Not only did she do a magnificent job taking care of her son, she also helped care for her goddaughter and nieces in Peekskill – Wendynet Turner, Suraily Scozzafava (goddaughter), Megseidy Jenkins, and Yaritza Adams. They were born into a world in which she and her son Danny were part of their nuclear family. She provided them with loving discipline and guidance and was one of their biggest advocates (she may have saved them from a spanking or two – ha, ha, ha). When they all had children of their own, Rosa Maria was there to care for them too. She was an integral part of their lives and she brought them great happiness. Rosita was a fun-spirited soul who was quick to laugh, be silly and enjoy a good prank. Her faith was of the utmost importance to her – she attended mass regularly and was part of the church choir for years. Her favorite book was the Bible – it brought her comfort and renewed her spirit. Rosa Maria’s love for her family was evident to all. She adored spending time with them any chance she got and would travel far to visit them when given any opportunity. Friendships were key relationships in her life – many of which were sustained throughout her lifetime. Cooking for her loved ones was a love language for her. Gathering with them and having them savor her alcapurrias, pasteles, or other delicious dishes brought her immense delight. Her ability to actively listen was heartfelt and her love for those close to her would elicit genuine advice from her. Along with her love of faith, family, and friends was her love for Puerto Rico. It made up a huge part of the fabric of her being. Her Puerto Rican pride was loud and unabashed. Music and dancing were her passion. Put on some Gran Combo, Marc Anthony or, in truth, any music at any party and she was out on the dance floor, but she made sure she wasn’t the only one. She pulled anyone she could to the dance floor and wanted to ensure that ALL had a wonderful time – even the most resistant would fall under her magnetic presence and warmth. Rosa Maria’s legacy will live on through her family and friends – in warm smiles, hearty laughter, inviting embraces, flavorful meals, authentic joy, sincere conversations, patriotic actions, expressive dancing, and beautiful music. Fue una corta pero intensa batalla contra el cáncer; así que temprano en la mañana las nubes se levantaron, y Dios la llevó al cielo para estar con Él. Le sobreviven su amado hijo Daniel Otero, su nuera Diana Córdova y sus nietos Daniel y Denisse Otero. También deja atrás a sus queridos hermanos Rafael Otero, Felicita Rivera, Aida Luz Otero y Reyes Arnaldo Otero y una gran cantidad de sobrinas y sobrinos junto con muchos amigos leales y miembros de la familia extendida. Rosita (o Ia), como la llamaban algunos, disfrutó crecer en Vega Alta: corría en el campo, jugaba con sus hermanos y amigos, contribuía a las tareas familiares y pasaba tiempo con su familia. En años posteriores, recordaría la pureza y la alegría que obtuvo de la vida cuando vivía en Vega Alta y los valores que le inculcó. Cuando tenía unos 12 años, se mudó de los "campos" a la "ciudad", el barrio Caparra Terrace de Río Piedras, Puerto Rico. Qué emocionante fue para ella, ¡era la vida en la gran ciudad! Rosa María también disfrutó de su tiempo allí: su naturaleza extrovertida le facilitó hacer nuevos amigos de forma rápida y permanente. Algunos de esos amigos seguían siendo amigos de ella hoy en día. En 1976, valientemente tomó la decisión de dejar su tierra natal y mudarse a Lowell, Massachusetts: nuevo país, nuevo idioma y nuevo clima (esos inviernos le costaron un poco acostumbrarse a su sangre latina, ja, ja, ja). Allí estuvo acompañada por sus hermanos Julio, José y Felicita. Después de pasar unos años en Massachusetts, Rosa María decidió mudarse a Peekskill, Nueva York, para estar cerca de su hermanita Aida Luz y del esposo de su hermana, Diego Otero. En febrero de 1980, Rosa María logró su mayor bendición: dar a luz a su hijo Daniel Otero. Él era la luz de sus ojos y ella lo protegía ferozmente. No solo lo amaba profundamente, sino que estaba sumamente orgullosa del hombre en el que se había convertido y de los valores que llevaba de ella. Pasó muchos años felices en Peekskill, haciendo más amigos y participando en su comunidad. No solo hizo un magnífico trabajo cuidando a su hijo, sino que también ayudó a cuidar a su ahijada y sobrinas en Peekskill: Wendynet Turner, Suraily Scozzafava (ahijada), Megseidy Jenkins y Yaritza Adams. Nacieron en un mundo en el que ella y su hijo Danny eran parte de su familia nuclear. Ella les brindó disciplina y guía amorosas y fue una de sus mayores defensoras (puede haberlas salvado de una o dos nalgadas, ja, ja, ja). Cuando todos tuvieron hijos propios, Rosa María también estuvo allí para cuidarlos. Ella era una parte integral de sus vidas y les traía una gran felicidad. Rosita era un alma divertida que se reía rápidamente, hacía el tonto y disfrutaba de una buena broma. Su fe era de suma importancia para ella: asistía a misa con regularidad y formó parte del coro de la iglesia durante años. Su libro favorito era la Biblia, que le reconfortaba y renovaba su espíritu. El amor de Rosa María por su familia era evidente para todos. Adoraba pasar tiempo con ellos cada vez que tenía la oportunidad y viajaba lejos para visitarlos cuando se le daba la oportunidad. Las amistades fueron relaciones clave en su vida, muchas de las cuales se mantuvieron a lo largo de su vida. Cocinar para sus seres queridos era un lenguaje de amor para ella. Reunirse con ellos y hacerles saborear sus alcapurrias, pasteles u otros deliciosos platos le producía un inmenso deleite. Su capacidad para escuchar activamente era sincera y su amor por las personas cercanas a ella le provocaba consejos genuinos. Junto con su amor por la fe, la familia y los amigos estaba su amor por Puerto Rico. Constituía una gran parte del tejido de su ser. Su orgullo puertorriqueño era fuerte y descarado. La música y el baile eran su pasión. Ponía un Gran Combo, Marc Anthony o, en realidad, cualquier música en cualquier fiesta y ella estaba en la pista de baile, pero se aseguraba de no ser la única. Llevaba a todos los que podía a la pista de baile y quería asegurarse de que TODOS se lo pasaran de maravilla, incluso los más resistentes caerían bajo su presencia magnética y su calidez. El legado de Rosa María vivirá a través de su familia y amigos, en cálidas sonrisas, risas cordiales, abrazos acogedores, comidas sabrosas, alegría auténtica, conversaciones sinceras, acciones patrióticas, bailes expresivos y música hermosa. Cada vez que experimentamos cualquiera de estos, sabemos que ella está con nosotros.
