Evergista Torres

In Loving Memory Our family matriarch, Evergista “Eve” Almodovar Torres, 87 years old, of Westfield, NJ and Kissimmee, FL passed away surrounded by family on July 23, 2021. She is the daughter of the late Juan Almodovar and Felicita Labrador. She moved from Guantanamo, Cuba to the United States in 1955 and married Mariano “Lerio” Torres a year later in Brooklyn, NY. They moved to Queens to begin their lives together and raised six children who were the loves of her life. She is survived by her children Teresa Torres Gould (Tom) of Westfield, NJ, David Torres (Melanie) of Millersville, MD, Noel Torres (Carmen) of Huntersville, NC, Marcos Torres (Ana Lilia) of Kissimmee, FL and Joseph Torres (Amy) of Coventry, RI, 16 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren as well as her sister, Ylda Moreno of Cabo San Lucas, MX and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Lerio, and her son, Albert. Eve was a talented seamstress who owned a bridal shop in upper Manhattan. Upon the birth of her second child, she sold the bridal shop but never lost her passion for sewing, and she taught herself how to do heirloom sewing and quilting once she started having grandchildren. The beneficiaries of her beautiful talent are her grandchildren and great- grandchildren who each received a special quilt “with love from Grandma”. She also loved crafts and one Christmas she surprised all the grandkids and great-grandkids, 10 in total at the time, with a big teddy bear with movable parts and a ribbon in their favorite color. Her greatest accomplishment in life was her family. She was proud of each and every family member; always greeting them with her radiant and infectious smile. She nurtured those around her to be their very best and loved them as they were. On family members’ birthdays every year, Mom/Grandma would always be the first to call. Although she couldn’t hold a tune, everyone looked forward to hearing her sing Happy Birthday which will be truly missed. During the summers, the house was always full of grandkids. She would do countless activities with them including numerous trips to Disney World. By speaking Spanish to all of her family, she taught the younger generation the language and culture, including family recipes. When someone was homesick for her cooking, she would surprise them with their favorite dish by overnighting it. Some of the best memories her family has are the vacations and beach trips she took them on. As a devoted grandmother, she nicknamed each grandchild at the time of their birth and referred to their nickname even as adults. She was a proud parishioner at St. Catherine of Siena Church in Kissimmee where she was honored to be a lector and a founding member of the Asociacion del Sagrado Corazon. The family will receive friends on Monday, August 2, 2021 from 4:00PM to 8:00PM at Porta Coeli Funeral Home located at 2801 E Osceola Parkway, Kissimmee, FL. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00AM on Tuesday, August 3, 2021 at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church at 2750 E Osceola Parkway in Kissimmee. Arrangements are under the direction of Porta Coeli Funeral Home. Help her kindness, loyalty and compassion continue by making a donation to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee in lieu of flowers.
